Each year Mairi creates eight weekends, combining effective learning,  stimulating groupwork and simplicity.  This year Mairi is offering a variety of courses:  improvisation, singing, putting thythm on your feet as well and alongside fiddling.

Mairi has many awards for her work as a musician – ‘Scots Singer of the Year 2009′, ‘Tutor of the Year’ 2012; Female musician of the year ( liveireland) Neil Gow Award 2010.  She combines teaching with performing and writing.

Since 2007 Mairi has taught at the Coast String Summer camp in BC, Canada and also at Mission folk Camp, Vancouver.

The teaching is a combination of tradition and technique and a chance for her to work with wherever you are at. Because the numbers are low – 8 participants for most courses, she attends to individual needs.   So whether it’s technical like improving bowing, left hand leading, intonation, opening up your voice… or traditional:  ornaments;  tempos;  rhythm; telling the story in a ballad,  these courses support both aspects.

You may be a beginner fiddler attending a weekly class; a more experienced player wanting to hone your skills; a classical player keen to learn more about traditional fiddle or wanting to extend your repertoire and learn a tune or two by memory.
Are you keen to sing and know more about your voice? Learn some new songs and sing in harmony with others? Do you play and sing?
Learn some basic steps to complement your fiddling or singing.  Root your rhythm and find your flow.

At the Lismore Music Retreats voices and fiddles mingle;  feet tap and fiddles flow, and stories, songs and tunes sit side by side.  This is where your music weaves into the music of the group.  Where we w
itness differences and delight in similarities!

In 2007 Mairi Campbell had the notion of using the wee cottage on the Isle of Lismore, which had been in the family for a long time, for some fiddle courses.  The cottage had recently been done up, made dry and warm and was an ideal place to host the weekends.

Mairi’s natural gift for teaching was quickly recognised and fiddlers of all abilities came and worked with Mairi for the weekend.  Word got out and fiddlers from up and down the country made their long journeys, finally crossing the water by ferry to a cottage where the fire was roaring, food was in the oven ready to serve and a cup of tea thrust into their hands on arrival.
